Create a blueprint for confronting your uncomfortable truths

Instructions

  1. Be clear about the truth that you want to share with your team
You’re hired as the new CEO of a large IT firm and are expected to grow the company’s revenue. You can start by using surveys to find out which products and services are not meeting consumer expectations. Do customers find your IT products user-friendly? If not, why? Gather as much information about the problems in your organization before confronting your management team.

  2. Ensure that the realization hits home fast
Call a meeting of your senior managers and software designers. Ask them to use one of the products that customers have been complaining about. Challenge them, one by one, to do so right there during the meeting rather than later on in their offices. This will ensure that the truth hits home in minutes or hours, not days.

  3. Let your audience discover the truth for themselves instead of lecturing them
As some of your team members struggle to use certain features of the product, sit back and let them draw their conclusions. Once they realize that the product has fundamental flaws, they’ll have a stronger resolve to go and completely redesign it. This insight will last longer in their memories than if you would have ordered them to redesign the software.
