Marriage and Morse Code
“A relationship between two people has a distinctive signature that arises naturally and automatically.”
People are in one of two states of a relationship. The first, positive sentiment override, is when positive sentiment overrides irritability - i.e., one partner will do something bad and the other will accept it. The second, negative sentiment override, is when one or both partners draw lasting conclusions about each other. This means that even positive acts will be received with negativity. For example, if one partner does something nice for the other, the other’s response would be along the lines of “they’re doing it to be selfish”.
For a relationship to be healthy, the positive sentiment override state should be achieved. However, studies show that once a couple slides into the negative sentiment override state, their relationship will continue to go downhill. It is, therefore, extremely important for couples to work towards maintaining a state of positive sentiment override in their relationship by emotionally supporting each other.
